Good Grief! Charlie Brown
For this project my main spark of inspiration came from one of the past student's works with the same project, especially with how they'd made use of different cuts for different pages to show not only the different layers, but also the difference in texture between the layers.
The Content
Now that a general idea of the booklet was starting to build itself in my head, I was slowly realizing the I needed CONTENT, or else my book would be completely meaningless and uninteresting. I'd just recently discovered a Japanese Graphic Design studio's work for an animated series called "Iroduku: The World in Colors", although I found the animated work to be lacking, the title cards used to intersect the middle of each episode with the ad-space were quite compelling and memorable. Since my eye had first gone to the interesting black-and-white grain texture of the paper, the noisy gradients of these title cards immeditaley connected for me.

Analyzing the source material...
Graphic gradients aside, this project was actually based on the characters from the Charlie Brown comics; so after a rather small time frame of 30 seconds I knew that I had to choose Woodstock, I knew there was some sort of proximity with our characters. I still had to better understand his design and attitude, which is why I went and collected a whole set of illustrations of him, but also some of my personal favourite strips of him.
Lastly...
After reading up on all the philosophical implications tied to our flightless friend, I was a fan. Yet, I still needed content, and I felt a wave of inspiration hit me as I went to the plaster workshop to prepare a crucial element of my book. The clay hand is not only there to give us a sense of scale, both physical and spiritual, when looking at our tiny bird, but it also symbolizes affection and care, especially given the pose it strikes. I spontaneously included it in my narrative and it fit like a glove! Lastly I also wanted to include another bird which I felt a strong connection to: my plush duck that I'd received on the day of my birth (he's most probably older than I am!). I had a strong feeling that he'd be good friends with Woodstock, thus both rest so coolly against each other on page 11.
